Manuel de Fallan Espanjalaiset kansanlaulut ovat tunnelmallisia makupaloja ja Miaskovskin toinen sellosonaatti taas suuren mittakaavan musiikkielämys. Silti ne molemmat ovat sellomusiikin ehdottomia suosikkiteoksia. Ristiriidoista syntyy myös Massenet’n Thaïs -oopperan kuolinkohtaus, jossa sekä pyhä hurmio että lihallinen intohimo soivat. Suuren musiikin äärellä kohtaa kaksi taiteilijaa, jotka molemmat tunnetaan ankarasta pyrkimyksestään ehdottomaan täydellisyyteen.
